being generally bone idle and lacking in things to fill our time, it is always gratifying to have last minute running around to do. So the changes to the gear list to include snowshoes and wetsuit requirements from 3mm, to 5mm, to 7mm, to how about a drysuit? have come as a welcome diversion from what would otherwise have been lazy days of summer for us. We are having a hoot collecting last minute gear items and working out if our airline baggage will be sufficient to take it, now that our gear has been sent on.

And the latest announcement re GPS? We like to consider ourselves to be pretty competent, consistent navigators, unfortunately events tell otherwise! (Werewolves’ principal navigators Tom, “so that hill we thought was over there is actually the one we are on now- how did that happen?” Lane and Paul, “oh! so plotting is along THEN up? Fancy that, when did that change?” Murphy, aren’t so bad, really. Actually Ashley “you will respect my authority” Edwards and Jason “small shaft refers to the paddle, you guys” Maloney often produce better navigation results but that is no reason to give the map to them!) The use of GPS, while understood for safety reasons given the snow is a disappointment to us as we were looking forward to our regular race workout of hours of aimlessly wandering around attempting to ‘get found’. The decision will surely be met with mixed reactions.

and now, as the American TV says, a word from our sponsors……

Paul, “what’s another $100 at this stage?” Murphy says… I have been a client of MPGear http://store.mpgear.com/ for years and am always delighted at their (very) quick shipping, professional customer service (thanks Erik and Zack) and, of course, great prices. MPGear have been outstandingly helpful to us - rallying to the cause for last minute gear for us especially coming through with snow shoes involving considerable work on their part.

Give MPGear a try, you will be pleased with the experience.

We are a few races on since the last entry- the Epic race was so on many levels, as it happens- but no tornadoes.

Werewolves have picked up a couple of sponsors, which is excellent and our thanks go out to them. They being:

Mountains Plus http://store.mpgear.com/ for all of your outdoor gear needs- they really are first class, you know. Tell them Werewolves sent you for an added bonus.

USA Fit http://www.usafit.com/ for those serious about their training and enjoying their training.

For now, we are busy packing, unpacking, repacking and all that. Rather a hoot.

The weather in Montana is looking rather different from the record breaking 100+ degrees we are experiencing here in Austin which is going to be a shock to the system.

Werewolves support will be provided by two first class, experienced racers- whether these qualities translate into good support remains to be seen! Our collective thanks to Alan Henson and Chad Giardina, both people who really should be racing on the team but we are far too selfish to let that happen.

As it happens, forgotten passwords have precluded any entries for a while. It only seems like yesterday that we had 100 days remaining and now we have 1/2 of that (57 as at writing). We really should do something.

The team has been busy with various local races and sporting events which has served as a proxy for training- it seems as if there is never enough time. Werewolves will be racing in the 48 hour Epic race http://www.rockstickpromotions.com/events_epic.asp?sec=2 which should be a hoot. This part of North Texas has wild weather at this time of year as an example, in the Rattlesnake Racing 3 day race in 06 (no race on in 07) in a somewhat nearby location, we enjoyed rain of monsoon proportions with lightning strikes nearby enough to feel a tingling- made me glad I am not the tallest in the team. Even though one of the team came close to suffering from hypothermia given the cold, wet, shocking weather we pulled a respectable 2nd place to 24Seven who went onto race PQ that year (we did not get a slot that year). So who knows what the weather will be like at the Epic- we look forward to it.

Having taken some time off since the USARA Nationals- where we did not do ourselves justice, I fear- we are now back in training with our first race of the season looming- the challenging Big Chill 24 hour race, put on by Too Cool Racing http://www.toocoolracing.com/ . The weather plays a significant part in the challenge of this race as it is often that terrible combination of wet and cold that eats into the core.

Werewolves PQ08 team is:

Tom, not a slave to fashion, Lane/ Ashley, but I didn’t know the picture would end up on the web, Edwards/ Jason, I’m an engineer and a Canuck- how’s that for a combination, Maloney and Paul, not a redeeming feature to be had, Murphy.
